Details

This book explores the Rationalist architecture of the GATCPAC group and the new avant-gardes of the 1920s and 1930s in the political, social, economic and cultural context of Catalonia and Europe. Richly illustrated with archive images and present-day photographs by Lluís Casals.

At the end of the 1920’s, a group of young Catalan architects and designers came together with the aim of renovating the philosophical and aesthetic ideas behind their work. They sought to do away with all unnecessary decoration and embellishments; they proclaimed that form had to follow function, and that there could be no beauty in anything that wasn’t useful and practical. They also wanted to provide that even the poorest people, the working class, could live in wholesome, quality houses.

Founding of the Grup d’Arquitectes i Tècnics Catalans per al Progrés de l’Arquitectura Contemporània, the famous GATCPAC, these young architects worked in connection to the great artists of the moment, such as Dalí, Miró or Picasso. They also had strong sympathies toward the social and political developments of the 1930’s; the republican and progressive movement for change that was traumatically halted in 1939 by the outcome the Spanish Civil War.
